Buy lossless music without a subscription: what you get

The short version

You can own lossless music without paying a monthly fee. You buy a download, you get the files, and they stay yours. No catalogue that changes under you, no copy protection that decides which device may play what.

This article is for listeners. It explains what "lossless" means in practice, which formats you can expect, and what to check before you buy. If you are an artist looking for a place to sell, our article on Bandcamp alternatives covers that side.

What lossless means

Lossless formats store the audio without discarding information. FLAC and ALAC compress the data and decode back to exactly the same samples. WAV stores the samples uncompressed. All three can carry the same audio; the difference is file size and metadata support.

  • FLAC: open format, good tagging, wide player support.
  • ALAC: Apple's lossless format, convenient if your library lives in Apple Music or on an iPhone.
  • WAV: uncompressed, large, limited tag support. Common in production workflows.

On bitsound, a purchased release can be downloaded as FLAC, ALAC or WAV, so you pick the format that fits your player.

Bit depth and sample rate

Two numbers describe the resolution: bit depth (16 or 24) and sample rate (44.1 kHz up to 192 kHz). "24/192" means 24 bit at 192 kHz.

Higher is not automatically better for every release. What you get depends on how the music was recorded, mixed and mastered. On bitsound, artists upload anything from CD quality (16/44.1) up to 24/192, and you download exactly the files the artist uploaded. So check the release page for the exact resolution before you buy.

Example: the album "Superposition" by The Visitors, released on 4 October 2026, has 12 tracks, all at 24/48 except "Moonbase" at 24/44.1. The release page lists the resolution next to every track: https://bitsound.com/artists/the-visitors/album/superposition

Previews and streaming are not lossless

This matters if you care about sound quality: previews and in-browser streaming are not lossless. On bitsound every release page has a 30-second preview, and signed in you can hear the full tracks. That helps you decide whether you like the music. It is not a way to judge the quality of the file. Lossless quality is in the purchased download only.

Why buy instead of subscribe

A subscription rents you access. A purchase gives you files.

  • Ownership: you keep the files, back them up, play them in any player.
  • No DRM: nothing restricts copying them to your own devices.
  • Predictable cost: you pay once per track or album. Artists set their own prices; "Superposition" costs 1 EUR per track or 9 EUR for the album.
  • Clear split: on bitsound, 90% of the net price goes to the artist.

Subscriptions are convenient for discovery. If you want to keep the music you love in full quality, a purchase is the simpler route.

Know what you are buying

Some releases are made with AI. On bitsound, every release states whether it is no, partly or mostly AI-generated, and that label is shown on the release page before you pay. Why we label AI music instead of banning it: https://bitsound.com/blog/en/bandcamp-bans-ai-music-bitsound-labels-it-instead

A short checklist before you buy

  1. Check the format (FLAC, ALAC or WAV) and the bit depth and sample rate on the release page.
  2. Use the preview to hear the music, not to judge file quality.
  3. Look for a clear statement on DRM. Files should play anywhere.
  4. Check how much of the price reaches the artist.
  5. Download and back up your files right away.

Where bitsound stands

bitsound is a download shop: lossless FLAC, ALAC and WAV, no subscription, no copy protection, 90% of the net price to the artist. It is not yet open to every artist and will open once around 20 artists have signed up, so the catalogue is still small.
